What should I look for in a freelance writer?
There are many people marketing themselves as “writers.” To know if the person you are hiring is a professional, it is imperative that you review his/her samples, learn about his/her experience and education, make sure you have a “personality match” with the writer, and carefully review his/her marketing materials. Marketing materials (i.e., my website) are a good indication of the quality and type of work that will be produced by the writer.
How much do you charge?
My hourly rate is negotiable and depends on the type of work required. I provide a quote that includes a range, the upper limit of which I will not exceed without your approval. Discounts may be given depending on the frequency and amount of work. Rush jobs may be billed at an additional rate, depending on my availability and deadline. I work quickly and efficiently, trying to keep my billable rate to a minimum.
How do we get started?
After you’ve reviewed my website and samples, we can discuss your project on the phone, in person or via e-mail. Once I have the particulars of your project, I will e-mail you a proposal. When you sign the proposal and provide me with a deposit I will begin working.
Do you require a deposit?
Yes, I require a 50% deposit before I begin working on your job, unless you are an established client. The remainder of the invoice will be billed when the job is completed. Checks are my preferred method of payment. I do not accept credit cards.
Can I see more of your work?
Absolutely. I have such an extensive, varied portfolio I can’t put all of my work on my website. I will gladly meet with you to show you more samples of my work.
What do samples tell me about a writer’s work?
The answer to that question can sometimes be not much. While you must verify that a writer can write, you should also keep in mind that the copy delivered to the client is most often altered by the client, for whatever reason the writer is unable to get final printed samples, or the writer has “ghost written” the piece and the client does not want that fact publicized.
How quickly can you finish my job?
My project availability fluctuates depending on my current work load. Generally, I can begin your project within a few days of receiving the signed contract and deposit. I will discuss my project availability and your deadline during the proposal stage.
What are my key talents?
- I have a knack for being able to make sense of things, quickly and without lots of input from the client. For example, I was hired to write the text for a martial arts instructor’s website. He gave me 30 pages of text he had printed out from the Internet and told me that everything in the materials was pertinent and should be included on his 3 page site. I was able to pull out 10 key points, describe them and give examples of their benefits.
- I work independently. I was working on the text for a very busy neuro-opthlamologist. He wanted 20 medical terms described in lay persons terms. Without taking his or his staff’s valuable time, I researched each term and described them in words people without 8 years of medical schooling could understand. He reviewed my work, made some minor adjustments and we were done.
- The ability to work quickly and efficiently and meet all deadlines.
- Communication. I communicate with my clients frequently, seeking their input throughout the process.
- Having a long list of satisfied clients. My client satisfaction is a reflection of my work and integrity. I go to great lengths to ensure the client has a final product that meets his/her needs and expectations.
Why do you like to proofread?
As an organized person I like consistency. I like to make sure there are no wrinkles in the bed spread, no typos in the text. Strange as it may sound, I delight in finding a spelling mistake or an inconsistency (i.e., website is one word on page 3 and two words on page 33).
How do you handle client confidentiality?
I take the privacy of my clients as seriously as I take my own. I frequently “ghost-write” for individuals and corporations and you will never see any reference to that work in my portfolio or on my website. I never discuss my work with other clients, unless I have received permission to do so, and then only in very general terms (XYZ Corporation is one of my clients). I will never reference any work I have created for you without your permission (i.e., being added to the client list on my website or using your work in my portfolio). When I am given proprietary information to help me do my job, I guard that information and keep it in the strictest of confidence.
